Biker-medics of Mumbai – Providing faster Emergency Care
Recently, Delhi is witnessing a problem that has stumped healthcare in the capital city of India. Lanes are too small for ambulances to enter. Taxi-drivers are afraid of the blood. Auto-rickshaws haggle for too long. And alas! The patient dies. Mumbai has countered the situation quite well. The biker-medics of Mumbai are here to the rescue.
These bike-borne paramedics in Mumbai and Maharashtra have revolutionized the concept of emergency response. This service was introduced in August 2017. The annual cost was Rs. 245 crore. In the same month this year, the biker-medics of Mumbai have been able to reach out to 3070 patients down with critical medical conditions. Another 2054 people hurt in causes of drowning, abuse, building collapse, fires, and some 912 struggling with injuries assault, accident, even poisoning and electrocution were rescued. Comparing the number of lives saved to the invested amount. the investment seems to be minuscule.
The work that has been done and the milestones achieved the group make it seem like quite a complex operation. On the contrary, the whole system is quite simple. A control room receives a call and the nearest bike is quickly dispatched to the spot. The bikers reach the patients mostly within 10 minutes. Then the person is immediately stabilised. This gives the ambulance enough time to arrive at the destination and prevents the death of the patient due to a lack of emergency response.
The paramedics are all trained in life-saving skills. They carry with them proper equipment like air splints to arrest fractures, bandages to stop bleeding, antiseptics to contain the spread of infection. They also carry medicines like adrenaline, atropine, frusemide and inhalers to handle stroke, heart attack and asthma. There are even Ambu bags to give artificial ventilation. They even carry a delivery kit.
All in the biker-paramedics of Mumbai ought to be an operation that is implemented in every state of the country.
